Lil Keed memorial vigil permit denied due to safety concerns

The last few weeks have been difficult for the esteemed Young Stoner Life, as the label continues to be tested with hardship and adversity.

Just days after the RICO indictment that left Young Thug, Gunna and more jailed in Fulton County, news of YSL star Lil Keed’s untimely death instantly broke the hearts of Slimes everywhere.

In memorium of the fallen rapper, YSL announced that it would be hosting a candlelight vigil held in Keed’s hometown of Forest Park, Georgia on Tuesday (May 24). The vigil may have been prematurely planned, though, as event organizers have run into a major roadblock. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the City of Forest Park has denied a permit to hold the event in Starr Park this week.

Prioritizing safety for “several upcoming events,” specifically in relation to city council’s general primary election, the city recognizes Keed’s cultural importance in the community — offering thoughts and prayers to his family and friends — yet is taking “elevated security measures” to ensure “the safety and well-being of our residents and businesses.”

Despite recent reports in the media and in light of several upcoming events — including next week’s very important general primary election — the city has decided not to issue a special permit for a vigil to be held at Starr Park on Tuesday, May 24. Officers from the Forest Park Police Department will be taking extra precautions next week to block streets and parking to Starr Park in an effort to help ensure public safety in our community. Extra patrols at all city parks and public recreation areas will also be taking place, as well, to address elevated security measures.”

These “recent reports in the media” are referring to YSL’s sweeping RICO indictment earlier this month. Young Thug was arrested on May 10 at his home in Buckhead, Georgia as the head of “Young Slime Life” (YSL). The indictment states that he and 27 other YSL associates have been involved in organized crime since 2012. If convicted of a RICO charge, Thug could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

Seeing as Forest Park is just over 10 miles outside of Atlanta, fans found it disheartening to see such a lack of support from Keed’s hometown following his passing. The city also wrote: “Although this may be a difficult time for a great number individuals, the city is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents and businesses. It is our sincere hope that the life of [Lil Keed] will be celebrated peacefully by all those who wish to remember him and his legacy.”

Following YSL’s legal woes and label-wide incarcerations, Metro Boomin and others defended the collective as a thriving music-driven business rather than a crime organization. Keed’s brother and rapper Lil Gotit recently checked in with Young Thug and Gunna regarding his death, writing on Instagram: “keed u fucked [Thug] up with this one but we know you guarding him through these times and make sure he gone be alright We da Proud Family can’t nothing stop us… Talked to [Gunna], he good, just sad what’s goin on wit twin but everything gone be in our favor.”

In the same vein, YSL is in the hearts and prayers of fans and peers alike as they mourn the turmoil the label has gone through. Keed has always championed the love he has for YSL, his labelmates and continually praised his mentor Young Thug during his career. He was not only a rising star, but a leader for the new wave’s ever-evolving sound.

Whether Keed’s vigil is rescheduled or relocated, those who have shown love and support for him are sure to pay their respects in due time.
