Portland rapper Aminé has seemingly kept to himself all 2021. Since releasing the deluxe version of second studio album Limbo in December, which was his highest charting project to date, he has not released any other work since.
That changed, however, Monday (Oct. 25), when Aminé released his vibrant, playful song “Charmander,” accompanied by a colorfully fitting music video.
“Charmander” sees several different facets of the 27-year-old rapper, utilizing his trademark upbeat, confident rapping, as well as low-pitched smooth vocals and contrasting squeaky sung hooks.
The song lasts for just over two minutes long, but is an experience that showcases a handful of different genre influences and flow switches. The pace of the song feels like light speed, which makes Aminé’s ability to mesh his hyper-pop influenced chorus and slick-tongued bars all the more impressive.
I’m a quiet motherfucker but I like to talk my shit
I’m off a shroom, I’m off a bean, I’m off a whole lotta shit
You could bet I’m in my head but you could bet I’m in your bitch
“Charmander” — Aminé
The song’s visuals correspond perfectly with the track, inserting goofy facial effects and a whimsical, building-sized dog to create a playful depiction of the atmosphere that this song tends to.
Aminé first announced “Charmander” last week, after requiring his fans to achieve 30,000 comments on his promotional post of the track, which he quickly racked up. So, it is fair to say fans were eager to hear Aminé’s first drop of the year.
As an introduction to a potentially new era of Aminé’s music, coming out of Limbo, “Charmander” displays a newfound versatility and energy from the young star. If he continues to release music of this quality, Aminé’s next album could be his best yet.
