In today’s industry, artists who don’t attach themselves to a specific genre usually find more success along the road.
Cactus Jack’s Don Toliver is a special example of that — as his voice is capable of effortlessly assimilating to any genre he steps in. From alternative hip-hop, trap, pop and now R&B, his latest effort “Drugs N Hella Melodies” is a curated mix of his talents stemming from his previous release “What You Need.”
Recruiting R&B-pop songstress Kali Uchis, Toliver finds himself soaking up the sun and enjoying his shine. On the three-minute long track, both Toliver and Uchis trade verses over smooth and sultry production — complete with echoing snares, snaps and airy synth melodies.
The accompanying music video showcases more of the track’s underlying themes — love, lust and everything that comes with those emotions. Boasting luxurious cars, incredible mansion shots, underwater effects and a steamy scene with Uchis and Toliver enjoying a bath together, Don encapsulates everything he’s set out to be: versatile, likeable and most importantly, talented beyond belief.
Toliver — widely known for his natural hook-making ability (i.e “Lemonade”) — turns in yet another exceptional performance on “Drugs N Hella Melodies” amid the upcoming release of his sophomore studio album, Life Of A Don.
As fans continue to wait for L.O.A.D, Toliver is still busy crafting the sound that’s made him a household name. Set to be released in July 2021, listeners are still holding their breaths for an official release date. However, fans will continue to wait — as it’s evident that Toliver possesses something a lot of artists don’t. After all, waiting on greatness is better than waiting on nothing at all.
