When rising Seattle-based rapper Highway dropped his collaborative EP Count Fast Untitled with producer Xjay at the end of August 2021, he inherently made waves in the underground scene.
From that, he’s garnered co-signs from Trippie Redd as well as some of the underground’s most promising stars like TyFontaine.
The project showed a variety of different styles ranging from upbeat bangers like “Mazi Mf” to softer, more introspective tracks like the fan-favorite “Better Float.” Now, Highway is back in his bag, dropping the accompanying visual for one of his most popular songs.

Highway hovers over âBetter Floatâsâ hazy, haunting instrumental. As he raps, a female voice croons in the background, creating a ghostly yet beautiful combination. XJay fills the production with a hard-hitting, thumbing bass and a gorgeous sample that Highway fits perfectly for the atmospheric track. His bars describe buying upscale items as necessities and outshining others when he shows up to their events.
I’m living this life, you mad that you can’t get into it
I’m spending this money, on shit that I know that I need
They like how did you show up to my own event and you looking flyer than me
Highway â âBetter Floatâ
Braggadicious lines like these are common in rap, but here, Highway makes it feel like he’s already three steps ahead of the game. He’s already secured the bag, gotten the chains and jewelry, and dresses better than his competition.
The black-and-white video matches the overall ethereal vibe of the song. Highway stands alone along the trees that cover a hill â staring over the city below him. He spits with poise and potency as grainy footage of money covers the screen. His nonchalant demeanor matches his lyrics as the camera bobs and weaves throughout the song â creating the imagery that he is floating and rising above everyone else.
The song and video paint a similar ambiance to 6lack and his mix of R&B and trap. However, Highway’s attitude and overwhelming confidence set him apart from the rest of the music scene â showcasing plenty of potential for his work in the near future.
Highway is just starting out, but with “Better Float” steadily raking up views, he’s definitely someone to watch out for in 2022.
