BROCKHAMPTON frontman drops single ahead of solo album.
Kevin Abstract released “SLUGGER” featuring rising Floridian $NOT and British rapper slowthai on July 16. The song comes during a busy year for Abstract as the rap group/boyband that he captains, BROCKHAMPTON, released their sixth studio album Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine on April 9 and subsequent deluxe on April 22. He also announced that the band would release another album before year’s end, and they will break up afterward.

“SLUGGER” employs a rattling beat similar to those seen on BROCKHAMPTON’s most recent project, as Abstract’s hook about taking his time is nothing short of addicting.
I’ve been movin’ heavy, try to givе my soul time
Life movin’ fast, boy, you need to slow down
It’s alright if you waste my timе
‘Cause I fuck with you, n****
“SLUGGER” — Kevin Abstract featuring $NOT & slowthai
The track is essentially split into two halves, with $NOT’s guest verse featured on the first half of the track and slowthai’s on the second. The middle, half-time portion sees Abstract ominously whisper over piano to usher in slowthai’s upbeat verse.
“SLUGGER” is an electric single that unites an intriguing combination of artists. Slowthai has worked with Abstract before, being used on an interlude in BROCKHAMPTON’s 2019 album GINGER. But, it is exciting to see Abstract work with up-and-coming rappers like $NOT on this track and ssgkobe on the deluxe of Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine. Abstract says he plans to drop frequently this year.
