Less than two weeks removed from his show-stopping sophomore album From A Bird’s Eye View (Jan. 14), Cordae was back to work. In an Instagram post from Morray on Jan. 24, the duo was in the studio working on an upcoming collaboration.
Now, around six weeks later, we have it. On March 4, Morray dropped “Still Here” with Cordae, his first official release of 2022.
On “Still Here,” Morray belches out the most passionate and harmonious vocals he has ever laid on a track. Lasting three minutes and some change, the song falls in line with the downtrodden ballads Morray typically unleashes, but sees an elevation in vocals by the North Carolina singer/rapper over soulful drums.
It ain’t the same in this world but I’m still here
Gotta be strong as I can having all these fears
Being stuck in these chains for so many years
But I gotta play the game ’cause I’m holdin’ all of these tears
“Still Here” — Morray featuring Cordae
To assist with creating the melancholic, yet courageous attitude of “Still Here,” Cordae’s verse bout the trials and tribulations of life are a perfect fit. Likely aligning with the uproar from fans bout his relatively low sales for his album, Cordae claims that sometimes “real music” isn’t always trendy.
Uh, I know the strugglin’ very well
They say life ain’t no fairytale and real music barely sells
My lil’ homie just made bail
I heard that Earth’s a strange hell, as a reason I can’t tell
“Still Here” — Morray featuring Cordae
The visuals for “Still Here” show Morray fight for sustenance in a cold world, but eventually he falls into the trap of incarceration that many in his community do.
Since the second half of 2021, Morray has been in a more collaborative mindset with his music, linking with Benny the Butcher and Polo G. Now, with Cordae, his ability to establish chemistry with his feature guests is elite.
