Atlanta trap legend and super-producer Sonny Digital came out of nowhere with an unexpected collaboration this past week. Enlisting one of the leaders of the new wave in SSGKobe, Sonny and Kobe collided for an energetic joint single, “Guess What”
No one would have guessed that one of the undisputed GOATs of the 2010s trap era would join forces with one of the most exciting young stars emerging out of SoundCloud’s increasingly popular renaissance. However, on “Guess What,” Sonny and SSGKobe deliver a rage-trap hybrid that sounds right at home within the changing soundscape of 2022.
On “Guess What,” the unlikely pair find a compelling middle ground for their respective styles — aided by a hard-edged, trap-leaning rage beat (produced by Franchise, Issy, and M15). The highlights of the track would have to be Sonny’s catchy “guess what” refrain on the hook and the way Kobe dances over the track’s heavy production with a gentle melodic flow.
The crisp music video, shot by the prolific SpuddsMckenzie, shows Sonny and Kobe donning all-black outfits – accompanied by a sea of extras who, as Spudds put it, “Were dope AF and all came with their own unique looks.”
“Guess What” is the lead single ahead of Sonny Digital’s upcoming Mr. Digital project set to drop this summer — his first release since announcing his signing to Generation Now. Much like his collaboration with Kobe, Sonny is showing that he is investing in tomorrow, fully embracing the new generation as he joins the all-star cast of Jack Harlow, Lil Uzi Vert and Seddy Hendrinx under DJ Drama’s watchful eye.
This latest single combined with his recent moves suggests that Sonny Digital is just as hungry as ever, with plenty left in the tank to contribute to the culture.
