Maryland-born R&B enigma Brent Faiyaz is an instant cure for the culture — curating and influencing a slew of our generation’s rising stars with his authentic sound and god-given voice.
Following his scintillating 2020 album Fuck the World — as the 10-track project earned critical reception all around — Faiyaz is now fully gearing up for his next chapter. Initially teasing his upcoming album Wasteland last December, the one-of-a-kind singer-rapper now has a “soft deadline” in place for the record. Taking to social media to announce the news on March 25, fans can tentatively expect Faiyaz’s long-awaited return on June 1 as he finishes the mix and master in Atlanta.
Despite not dropping a full-length project in over two years, Faiyaz is taking his time with the “masterpiece” he’s set out to create — keeping up with big-name appearances amid his absence. Linking up with Tyler, The Creator on “SWEET / I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE” off his Grammy-nominated album Call Me If You Get Lost — as well as their single “Gravity” with DJ Dahi — the “Lost Kids” mogul led in his new era with his viral hit “Dead Man Walking” at the end of 2020, also hopping on “lost souls” with Baby Keem, “Found” with rising African star Tems and “Wasting Time” with Drake all last year.
Stemming from its presumed lead single “MERCEDES” in December 2021, the track sees Faiyaz in near final form, floating over its ethereal yet hard-hitting production with sultry sing-rapping defined by blurry nights and a woozy rendezvous. Speaking on similar topics found all over his discography, Faiyaz crafted an end of year banger that only jumpstarted Wasteland’s eventual summer release.
With no cover art or tracklist available just yet, the only information fans have at this time is a photo of Faiyaz with Future in the studio. As Wasteland looks to be a beacon of toxicity for the generational talent, the album is poised to shape into Faiyaz’s magnum opus as the summertime settles in.
