Conway the Machine shows that ‘God Don’t Make Mistakes’ on latest album

After months of anticipation, the newly-independent Griselda co-founder Conway the Machine has released his Shady Records debut, God Don’t Make Mistakes (Feb. 25).

Preceded by singles in “Stressed” featuring Wallo267 and the woozy “John Woo Flick” with family Benny the Butcher and Westside Gunn, Conway enlists a luxurious cast of characters to deliver his defiant, in-your-face project post-Griselda.

With production from heavy-hitters in Hit-Boy, The Alchemist, Daringer and a guest list that includes Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, TI, God Don’t Make Mistakes seems to be a reflective victory lap for Conway, as The Machine dives into his past and brings out some of his most personal and introspective lyrics to date. On the title track, he thinks back on the day he got shot, forever changing his life’s trajectory.

What if I never got shot in the head?

I couldn’t get sleep that night, might drop a tear in that hospital bed

Thinkin’ it’s over with for rockin’ the mic

They told me I’d be paralyzed neck down, what if the doctor was right? (What if he was right?)

Conway the Machine – “God Don’t Make Mistakes”

Earlier this month, Conway dropped off a DatPiff exclusive mixtape titled Greetings Earthlings — which contains freestyles of tracks in Nicki Minaj’s “Seeing Green,” Drake’s “Wants And Needs,” J. Cole’s “m y . l i f e” and even a pair of Kanye West classics. Announcing that GDMM would be his last album with both Shady Records and with Griselda, the Buffalo wordsmith will now focus his energy on his own budding imprint, Drumwork.

With this in mind, much of the lyrical themes found throughout the album — as well as its title — make perfect sense for Conway’s season of change. While he looks back on all that’s happened to him, in both his career and every day life, he finds solace in being thankful for every moment — knowing that mistakes are meant to be made in order for you to become who you are.

Simply put, God Don’t Make Mistakes feels like a triumphant victory lap for the Buffalo native. “So Much More” exudes this aura perfectly, reminding listeners that despite leaving Griselda, he still has much more to accomplish moving forward. With his new label already showing impressive recruits like Jae Skeese, Conway’s future is looking brighter than ever.
