Kay Flock continues to make waves even from behind bars with his latest single “Geeked Up” – marking a big moment for Bronx Drill as the legendary Gucci Mane taps in with the regional subgenre’s biggest star.
With “Geeked Up,” Guwop, who is known for throwing his support behind controversial street-oriented artists, becomes the latest in a long line of top-tier co-signs for the 19-year-old phenom including Cardi B, G Herbo, Lil Tjay and Fivio Foreign.
The song itself stands out from much of Kay Flock’s catalog, forgoing the standard drill production for an almost trance-like beat (prod by Project Kidz) lightly sprinkled with elements of drill – its catchy chorus and alternate production loosely reminiscent of Flock’s early hits with B-Lovee like “Opp Spotter” and “Speed Racin” that helped put the young Bronx drillers on the map.
On a rare feature verse from Gucci Mane, the boogeyman of ATL fully endorses Kay Flock as he relates NYC’s drill phenomenon to the trenches of his home city of Atlanta with bars like: “NYC to the A, n****s get shot every day.”
The visual for “Geeked Up” shows Kay Flock’s faithful right-hand man Dougie B standing in for his brother as he rides around the city, posted up and getting sturdy at various locations around the Bronx before Guwop jumps in to deliver his verse. It was also shot by Kaiyah Napri, who directed the iconic “Brotherly Love” visual with B-Lovee and Dougie B that set off the Bronx Drill wave early last year.
Despite being behind bars, “Geeked Up” is just the latest example of Kay Flock continuing to carry the torch for the Bronx with top-tier collabs both in and outside the city. Hopefully, when he overcomes his current predicament he’ll be able to continue to export his borough’s regional sound to the mainstream.
