Kid Cudi’s upcoming 2023 Netflix film ‘Teddy’ will be co-produced by Jay-Z

As it turns out, Kid Cudi may be just as gifted in front of the camera as he is with a microphone. Following his stellar acting debut in 1970s horror film X, released through A24 on March 18, it seems like his big screen career is just getting started.

Along with being cast in September 17, the upcoming directorial debut for his X cast-mate Brittany Snow, Cudi will soon be making his a directorial debut of his own. On Tuesday (March 22), the Cleveland rapper announced that is film Teddy will release in 2023 on Netflix, which he will star in, write and direct.

Cudi also shared that among the handful of co-producers is Jay-Z, who he collaborated with for the first time musically in October 2021 for the The Harder They Fall soundtrack on the song “Guns Go Bang.”

Scott Mescudi, Kid Cudi’s legal name, has been working on Teddy since 2013, as it has transformed from a television series to a film in the script-writing process.

“The road has been long, from it being a tv show for years to finally being a film,” he said. “So it means so f**kin much to finally be able to bring it to the screen next year, and I cant wait for u all to meet Teddy, his friends, his family and take a walk in his world for a bit.”

Cudi continued by giving a small glimpse of what inspired him while writing the movie, explaining that it is the on-screen manifestation of his 2009 Man on the Moon smash hit “Pursuit of Happiness.”

“If I could sum up what the movie is about in one sentence, id say this: It’s as if I took the song “Pursuit of Happiness” and wrote a movie about it,” he said. “I added a lot of my own personal struggles and experiences in it, so this film is very close to my heart.”

While there is currently no release date or full cast for the movie, it will be interesting to see how Cudi’s ideas translate into a film rather than music, although we’ve already seen him put out a documentary last year and tease an upcoming animated Netflix show, which he will rollout with an accompanying album.

Cudi has a lot on his plate right now, with two albums on the horizon this year and many ambitious moves in the cinematography scene. But, that has not stopped him from other side missions, such as dropping a new single on April 8 titled “Stars In The Sky,” which will land on the soundtrack for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie releasing on the same day.

It feels like no matter how much news comes out about Cudi, he still finds ways to make fans more excited about the future of his career.
