Atlanta chart-topper inches closer and closer to debut album.
Lil Nas X‘s entire career has ultimately led to this moment — the release of his debut album MONTERO. Ever since “Old Town Road” peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in May 2019, Lil Nas X has had a full-length project in his sights.
His EP 7 (June 2019), added more weapons to his arsenal than just a country-rap fad. The project saw him venture into new avenues of hip-hop, pop and even rock. Songs like “C7osure (You Like)” saw Nas X employ a piano-infused instrumental to craft a soulful ballad, while “Panini,” which peaked at No. 5 on the Hot 100, is an uptempo, autotune bop with production from Take a Daytrip.
Since 7 and its subsequent remixes that he can be so fond of like “Rodeo” remix with Nas and “Panini” remix with DaBaby, Lil Nas X has only released three songs in total. “HOLIDAY” came in November 2020 and he used this song to reassure his doubters that he was not done yet. Nas X seems very comfortable on the song switching flows and seamlessly meshing sung hooks and rap verses with lyrics like:
Pop star, but the rappers still respect me
They wanna know if I’ll be lastin’
Bitch, even if I started floppin’, there’d be fashion“HOLIDAY” — Lil Nas X
In March, he dropped the provocative “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name),” using the music video to boldly assert himself as a queer icon in hip-hop, and music in general. “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” reached No. 1 on the Hot 100, making it Lil Nas X’s second song to do so.
He also dropped “SUN GOES DOWN” in May, which utilizes a sample from Iann Dior‘s November track “Holding On.” Throughout this entire time, Nas X has reiterated multiple times through Twitter that his album is on the horizon.
Today, June 29, Lil Nas X took to Twitter to drop the teaser for his new album MONTERO, with the caption “‘MONTERO’ THE DEBUT ALBUM COMING SOON!”
The teaser takes influence from the intro for all films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, compiling all his musical moments up until now. The end of the video shows another portion of perhaps his most popular snippet, “Industry Baby.” He first previewed the song in October while dancing with the two members of Take a Daytrip.
It’s also been hinted that Jack Harlow may be a feature on the song, and Nas X and Harlow added fuel to that fire this past weekend at the BET Awards.
MONTERO has tons of buzz around it already. Lil Nas X has more than a handful of snippets for potential songs on the album, some No. 1 songs in his back pocket and now a new teaser for the upcoming record. Summer could be getting even hotter with Lil Nas X leading the charge to swelter listeners once more.
