Meek Mill reminisces on ‘Early Mornings’ in new YouTube exclusive single

In one of the first bars Meek Mill delivered on his first official single of the year, he tries to justify his absence, rapping “Ain’t really been droppin’, I been tryna get my sh*t straight.” While most of the time, hip-hop fans don’t particularly have much sympathy for the extra-curricular activities that keep their favorite artists from dropping music, Meek’s scenario should certainly garner some leeway.

Throughout 2022, the Philly icon has been battling for the rights to his music and his life’s decisions, evident in his dispute with Atlantic Records in February and his split from Roc Nation management in July. In light of this, he had been looking to bypass the politics of releasing music by potentially dropping a great deal of mixtapes, 10 to be exact. But, whether it be the blockchain NFT tape he had been teasing or the surplus of projects he had slated for this month, there was still no indication of a return one week into September.

But, on Sept. 9, he took a small step in the right direction. Releasing “Early Mornings” solely on YouTube as a music video, Meek visually took fans through the realities of the impoverished in the neighborhood of Kensington in Philadelphia, as well as catching us up on the moves he’s made this year such as catching flights and basketball games.

Throughout the song, Meek shakes the rust off of the eternal chip on his shoulder, spitting about how you need to look out for yourself and get to as much money as you can.

I told n****s that these hoes ain’t got no love for us

I told n****s that these rappers don’t really f**k with us

The wave is all they want from us, like it’s made for only one of us

I’m straight on all that other stuff, for real

I know hangin’ deep off in the trenches get me killed

But I get a rush from it, know the way it feel

“Early Mornings” — Meek Mill

Meek’s strained vocals in some portions of the track mkee it evident of the passion he puts into every one of his verses, which is why his return is so welcomed. Earning over 1.5 million views in just one weekend, it’s clear fans are eager to hear more from the Philly darling. While it’s not clear if he still plans to drop all those mixtapes this month, it’s wonderful to see he’s back to doing what he loves.
