Tophillfreddo goes crazy on new EP ‘Before I Went Crazy’

DMV native Tophillfreddo returned last week with a new EP, ‘Before I Went Crazy.

In an underground scene where rage and plugg sounds are dominating, Tophillfreddo is quite literally marching to the beat of a different drum.

When it comes to the layered production and signature speaker-blowing basslines produced by his secret weapon Fish, who also produced his last two projects FAITH and versatile.wav earlier this year, Freddo’s new project, Before I Went Crazy, sees the DMV rapper lean into his lone wolf status — hinting at future projects at the same time.

On his new project, Tophillfreddo dives deeper into his mad genius ways — taking hold of the distinct, high-energy signature sound he’s developed with the help of frequent collaborator, Fish. Instead of following the trends, Before I Went Crazy sees the pair continue to double down on their unique approach, carving out a distinct lane in the underground that captures many of the new wave’s most captivating qualities while defying its existing categories.

As a whole, the project is extremely cohesive and leaves no doubt about what a Tophillfreddo track sounds like — defined by his confident flows, big crescendos and dynamic room-shaking production that begs for a moshpit. On social media before releasing the tape, Freddo called Before I Went Crazy his best body of work yet.

With just one feature, eight tracks and a 19-minute runtime, the tape is direct and to the point. The project’s lead singles “SACRIFICES” and “GENIUS” probably best exemplify Freddo’s signature sound, flirting with the line between between crazy and genius as he floats over massive swirling synths and punchiest of drums. There are also standout tracks like “I CHANGED” and “WAY UP” where he shows off the strength and versatility of his vocal, cutting through the busy production to let his dynamic flows shine.

Freddo meant it when he said on “SACRIFICES”: “I just had to make some sacrifices now this sh*t is goin up.” Years of hard work seem to be finally paying off as he begins to gain traction in the underground and fully step into his potential with a polished signature sound. Now with three projects released this year, 2022 has to be the best year yet for Freddo.

As he continues to forge on with his original style and producer-loyal approach, it’s hard to disagree with that Before I Went Crazy isn’t Tophillfreddo’s strongest body of work to date. And if this is before, we can’t wait to see what happens after he goes crazy.
