IDK drops first of two KAYTRANADA collabs with ‘Taco’ single

Last July, Maryland wordsmith IDK‘s studio album USEE4YOURSELF caught the eyes of hip-hop fans for his patented brash flow, his vulnerable song topics and lyricism and his thrilling feature roster, which contained assists from high profile rappers like Young Thug, Offset, MF DOOM, Jay Electronica, Rico Nasty, T-Pain and more.

Similar to IDK’s recent project, well-established Haitian-Canadian DJ and producer KAYTRANADA‘s bulk of his career has been predicated on his ability to mesh his sound with big game artists from the rap and R&B world. Although the dance/electronic magician has worked with hip-hop stars like Chance The Rapper, Anderson .Paak, Pharrell and others, he had never made music with IDK, until now.

On March 20, IDK previewed his eventual collaboration with KAYTRANADA on TikTok, showing behind the scenes footage of the music video set for the song.

Then on April 5, he asked his fans on Twitter which of the two IDK x KAYTRANADA songs they wanted first, “Taco” or “Breathe,” after he had shown snippets of both on TikTok.

Fans voted for “Taco” and a week later, they got their wish. “Taco” sees IDK settle into a comfortable and confident flow over KAYTRANADA’s groovy keys and claps on the instrumental.

While the song does not contain much of a topical focus, IDK seems motivated from the get-go to put an end to the “pussy n****s” he encounters in the first verse.

Y’all n****s is pussy, ain’t no debatin’ it

Ain’t no complainin’ or fakin’ it

I’m a d*ck and you takin’ it, pussy n***a, I’m on one

Don’t make me spin on all you n****s and bomb one

Embalming fluid through my music, is you stupid?

Don’t make ’em have to call the coroner to come use it

“Taco” — IDK, KAYTRANADA

After two volatile verses and two renditions of the brief hook, KAYTRANADA unleashes a wicked woodwind solo to cap off the electric collaboration.

It is currently unclear when IDK will release the second single he has in the vault with KAYTRANADA, but they will likely both land on his assumed upcoming album Simple, named for Simple City, a neighborhood in Southeast Washington DC where IDK was raised.
