NBA YoungBoy shows his true ‘Colors’ on new 20-track mixtape

Just a few weeks into the new year and NBA YoungBoy is already outworking everyone.

Sharing a handful of tracks on YouTube ahead of his new mixtape COLORS, YB is releasing at a rate like no other — experimenting with a new sound and image altogether.

Prior to Colors’ release, YoungBoy dropped “Know Like I Know” — the sixth single from his house arrest mixtape. The first track was the bombastic “Fish Scale” released on Jan. 5. Soon after, “Emo Love,” “Foolish Figure,” the DaBaby-assisted “BESTIE/HIT” and most recently “Bring The Hook” all followed “Fish Scale’s” lead. All of these tracks were exclusively available on YouTube, as YB continues to reassert his reign as the platform’s highest streamed artist.

On top of his 2022 slate, Internet Money label boss Taz Taylor let fans know of their collaboration with the superstar rapper earlier this week. “Flossin” — which is also included on the on the Colors mixtapeis the first single on the year for the producer collective, as fans of both Internet Money and YoungBoy are eating this weekend.

While YB continues to amass an impressive discography, Colors’ lead singles in “Emo Love” and “Foolish Figure” are a step outside the box for the Baton Rouge rapper — continuing to introduce fans to his new aesthetic while dabbling with lyricism centered around emotion. Heartfelt realizations of the man he wants to be and the experiences he’s endured in prison are a central theme of the project’s nucleus. Regardless, YoungBoy finds his meaning within the music — allowing fans to be taken along for the ride.

In both singles, YoungBoy slows down his flow and changes up the pace on listeners — proving his singing ability and overall artistic versatility once more. With sultry guitar progressions and swoon-driven vibes, YoungBoy puts on a show as he creates addicting melodies courtesy of his unique southern-influenced cadence.

Colors not only deviates from the Cajun-spiced style heard on Sincerely, Kentrell, but still turns up the heat by being himself in every way. Donning face makeup in previous music videos and fully embracing all parts of his personality, YB’s Southern flair fully shines on this new chapter of his story — finding the person within himself that he was always meant to be.
