Vince Staples drops second single ‘ARE YOU WITH THAT?’ for upcoming album

Long Beach native releases new song three days before self-titled album.

It’s Vince Staples season. We’re three days away from the release of Vince Staples’ fourth studio album Vince Staples.

Ahead of the album, Staples’ dropped the single “LAW OF AVERAGES” on June 18. The self aware track shows Vince rapping about people in his life needing to know their role. The minimalistic instrumental showcased his lyrical prowess.

Around the same time he changed his Twitter username to ‘VINCE STAPLES JULY 9th’ as an informal announcement for his upcoming LP.

On July 2, he posted the official announcement of the album on Instagram along with its tracklist of 10 songs.

The album has since become available for pre-save on Apple Music and only lists one feature, Fousheé, on the seventh song “TAKE ME HOME.”

Vince Staples released the album’s presumed intro “ARE YOU WITH THAT?” this morning, July 6. The song clocks in at around two minutes and 20 seconds, and is produced by Kenny Beats, just as the rest of the album is.

The production creates a mellow atmosphere, much like on “LAW OF AVERAGES,” as Kenny Beats allows Staples to carry the performance. However, contrasted with this blithe beat is Vince’s trademark bars about living in a rough environment and his rugged attitude.

City goin’ up (Up), so you better bust

Finna see who really one of us

Really spillin’ blood (Cuz), everybody tough

‘Til they gotta go and see the judge

“ARE YOU WITH THAT?” — Vince Staples

The first two songs for the album have been released, and they present a more laid-back Vince Staples, but with the same street edge. Perhaps this pattern will continue throughout the entire project, but we will have to wait and see.
