It’s been almost two years since we last heard from BROKE BOii.
Breaking into the underground scene with songs like “Gnarly” and “Ovo Flow” in 2021 and early 2022, BROKE BOii came out of the gates swinging, rapping like someone who’s been doing this for quite some time. Stepping away from the mic, the Los Angeles rapper has been locking in and honing his skills during this time, as “My Year” is the single that breaks the drought — and he’s got even more on the way.
That innate coolness is present in full force on “My Year,” as BROKEBOii twists and turns his palpable flow in accordance with the glistening production, which is chock-full of muddy drums and pattering hi-hats courtesy of Boston-based multi-platinum producer JahDaGod. It all comes together in the mix, though, with Grammy-nominated engineer Donn Robb tackling the recording, mixing and mastering for the track.
Exuding an effortless flow isn’t easy, but BROKEBOii makes it seem that way. Paired with the instrumental, he skis down a diamond-studded, expert-level slope with ease. Showing no signs of slowing down, this is a good time to check back in with the 19-year-old rapper. The time that BROKEBOii took to manicure his sound has clearly paid off — and this is just the beginning.
You can catch BROKEBOii in Chicago this summer at Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash festival on Friday, June 23.
