Fans of the late-LA rapper Drakeo the Ruler were devastated to learn the news of his unfortunate passing in December.
His impact as a Los Angeles mainstay was felt all throughout the streets, as the young blossoming emcee was mournfully laid to rest in his hometown Tuesday (Feb. 15). Family and friends all gathered to say their final goodbyes to the 28-year-old rapper. Drakeo’s — whose real name is Darrell Wayne Caldwell — funeral procession was held at Greater Emmanuel Temple Church in Lynwood, as his mother spoke to Rolling Stone at the funeral on his legacy.
“It really hit me last night. Reality is setting in. This is my baby,” Corniel said. “My son had class, and I wanted him to go out with class.”
During his performance at “Once Upon A Time” festival in December, tragedy struck when Drakeo was fatally stabbed backstage. His mother, Darrylene Corniel, not only plans to sue the venue for negligence, but directly blamed the event’s security staff for the events that transpired Dec. 18 in a recent Rolling Stone report.
Claiming inadequate security played a large part in Drakeo’s death, Corniel also divulged that her son was a well-respected and productive member of society, planning charity events for the homeless and needy children — further scorning the festival’s lack of care and artist safety that ultimately took his life.
“We plan to sue. This happened backstage at an event. Someone has to be held accountable. They let all these people in, and you’re not supposed to have all these people backstage. And your security is supposed to be in place.”
“The whole program should have been orchestrated a lot better than what it was. And there should have been more protection. Even if you have metal detectors, even if you pat them down, you let those people come in there. You had more people come in than you were supposed to. And you allowed them to jump my son. You didn’t protect my son.”
