A barrage of Instagram stories throughout the week led to Playboi Carti’s new song “PLAY THIS” exclusively released on a whim Thursday night (Nov. 21).
Posted on his alt-account @opium_00pium, where tracks like “H00DBYAIR,” “2024” and more were released at the top of the year, the Opium superstar made a one minute and 26 second loosie feel just as momentous as a major label smash. Complete with an intro, outro and earworming hook, “PLAY THIS” is just the latest snippet (or full song in this case) to be shared by Carti in recent days. And more MUSIC is certainly on the way.
Teasing “BACKDOOR A MF” produced by Ye days earlier on his IG story, Carti clued fans into new music in multiple text message exchanges on his Instagram. “NEW CARTI FRIDAY,” the photo read as Carti not only dropped “PLAY THIS” on his finsta Thursday night, but shared a HQ CDQ of the fan-favorite snippet “YOUNG VAMP LOVE.” Carti isn’t stopping here, though, taking to IG to let fans know that a stream of new songs are in the tuck.
“IM NOT DONE AT ALL DIS SUM COOL SHT I WANTED YALL TO HEAR BC I LOVE DIS SONG,” he wrote. “BUT DA SHT DATS ON MY ALBUM OVERLY TRIMM.” Carti this commented in another IG story, further stoking the fire I AM MUSIC is burning: “IM LOCKED RN OVERLY TRIM I TOLD 5 I WANT YALL TO HEAR DIS MF 2 WHAT WE DOIN.”
Fresh off headlining performances at ComplexCon and Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival, Playboi Carti is gearing up for another festival set this weekend at Rolling Loud Thailand. It seems that during each of these live shows, something takes centerstage. Whether it was the 2Hollis produced “WHAT’S MY MF NAME” (note: this is not its official title) or The Weeknd popping out to perform “Timeless” at Flog Gnaw, it’s clear all eyes are on Playboi Carti as his long-awaited album I AM MUSIC continues to gain steam.
What’s uncanny is the only official solo release from Playboi Carti during a career-defining year was “All Red” back in September. Now, as he prepares to drop arguably the biggest album of his life, know that Playboi Carti is facing the music head on.
