Tyler the Creator, Nardwuar take a trip down memory lane in new interview

Despite being in the middle of his record-breaking Call Me If You Get Lost tour at the time of recording, the Grammy-winning Tyler the Creator met up with Canadian music journalist Nardwuar for the fifth time in his career.

Tyler and the human serviette have clearly grown a close bond since the duo’s first interview in 2011. Taking place at Beat Street Records, Nardwuar takes the CMIYGL artist down memory lane where he finds surprises gifted by Nard in typical fashion. Surrounded by records, magazines, custom action figures and other rap memorabilia, Nardwuar also reflected on he and Tyler’s previous Odd Future interviews and how they played a vital role in his rise in popularity.

The internet’s hip-hop sleuth brought things full circle, showing Tyler an old OF interview where he was said, “I could be a complete failure by June, but I don’t see that happening. I see Grammys.”

With a plethora of awards behind him and a second Rap Album Of The Year under his belt, Tyler and Nardwuar dive deeper into the samples he used on CMIYGL, his custom boat for the tour, favorite spots to eat around Los Angeles and so much more. Nard was in peak detective mode bringing up a pair of teachers, Mr. Slade and Mrs. Murphy, that were instrumental in Tyler’s early sound at the Academy of Media Arts. Despite only being at that school for what Tyler described as a couple of weeks, he says “They were instrumental to the base of what I do right now.”

Similarly, Nard showed Tyler a pair of early Gangsta Grillz mixtapes with the inquiry about how Tyler got involved with DJ Drama for CMIYGL. Finding Drama on the internet in the early 2000s with mixtapes with Lil Wayne, T.I. and more proved to be influential in the way Tyler listens to music saying ‘‘DJ Drama was ahead of one of the biggest mixtape series of all time, that really shaped how a lot of people make music including me.”

Throughout the interview, Nardwuar learns of Tyler’s musical inspirations, his workout routine, tips for wearing a fur hat all while giving Tyler a bounty of gifts. After he is done being grilled by Narduar, Tyler tours the record store looking through magazines that he remembered from growing up.

Posted on Monday, the interview has already amassed over 1 million views and sits at No. 5 on YouTube’s trending chart.
