ok Interview: Glokk40Spaz, Nettspend, OsamaSon

“I don’t want to be anybody, I want to be somebody,” wegonebeok says as he reflects on his success thus far. “I don’t want to be mediocre at anything.”

The Charlotte, North Carolina producer has made major waves in the scene’s revitalized underground, helping launch the rises of budding stars like Glokk40Spaz, OsamaSon and Nettspend, among many others. This is one of the many reasons why ok isn’t another run-of-the-mill producer, he’s calculated, creative and original in everything he does.

Producing tracks like OsamaSon’s “troops,” “Blonde” as well as Nettspend’s breakout hit “Nothing Like Uuu,” high-energy, angelic beats are just the start of ok’s story. He imagines much more for himself, wanting to work alongside pop stars and dabble in dance and opera sounds in the future. The producer’s drive to become a derivative “somebody” in a scene filled with clout chasers and trend-hoppers is apparent when he speaks on his creative process. Whether it’s the wine-Casamigos secret concoction flowing freely in his studio sessions–and throughout his conversation with OGM host Hakeem Rowe–wegonebeok evidently knows what it takes to be great, soaking up game and being a student above all.

With a heightened sense of awareness and ability to navigate collaborations off “gut feelings,” ok doesn’t pigeonhole himself (or his sound) to one specific lane. “I try to make beautiful music,” he says. “I’m a very harsh critic of myself.” This has not only helped him mold the swag and sonic landscape of the new underground, but has ultimately lifted himself into bigger conversations. With a compilation tape in the works, which he reveals will be packed with new wave talent and artists “you wouldn’t expect,” know that everything will be ok for wegonebeok as he continues his ascent to producer stardom.

In our latest OGM interview, Hakeem sits down with rising producer wegonebeok to speak on working with Glokk40Spaz, OsamaSon, Nettspend, making “Nothing Like Uuu,” “Blonde,” his producer influences, overcoming beat blocks, his creative process, meeting Lazer Dim and much more!
