DC The Don brings ‘SACRED HEART’ mixtape to all platforms

For much of the last half of 2022, DC The Don has been building towards his upcoming studio album FUNERAL. But after putting out promotional singles like October’s “Suicide” with midwxst, November’s “All I Know” and “Poison” on Dec. 9, he decided to pivot away from FUNERAL preparations for the holidays.

Practically out of nowhere on Christmas Day, Donny dropped his then-SoundCloud exclusive mixtape titled SACRED HEART, which was officially released on all DSPs as of Friday (Jan. 27). Using a religious, stain-glass themed cover art, SACRED HEART consists of 13 tracks that were either loosies and anticipated snippets, or ones that DC wanted to put out outside of the framework of FUNERAL.

Sandwiched between the thrilling, horn-filled opener “SRT (intro)” and the “SO SICK” outro that samples OMI‘s 2014 hit “Cheerleader,” the mixtape mostly consists of the melodic sound with bouncy instrumentals reminiscent of a younger Donny. Bops like “UMBRELLA,” “HEADPHONES” and “11:30” deliver harmonies and songwriting that remind listeners of the Come As You Are era, which is fitting considering that the death of DC’s alter-ego Rag3 Kidd is looming.

The day after SACRED HEART dropped, DC put out a music video for the tape’s fourth song “SHUT UP!”. The black & white visuals for “SHUT UP!” show clips of Donny and his crew on the road for his recent “FUNERAL” tour which wrapped up in Houston, TX on Dec. 17.

In the comment section of DC’s SACRED HEART announcement post on Instagram this weekend, a separate account dedicated to his upcoming studio album (@rkfuneral) clarified that this mixtape is not what FUNERAL was meant to be.

Confirming that the highly-anticipated LP is still on the way, Donny’s latest Christmas present for his supporters is another reason why he is one of the underground’s most beloved acts.
