Noted as adaptable, impulsive and intelligent, there’s never a dull moment when you’re hanging with a Gemini — and LUCKI seems to embody his Zodiac sign fully on his new album.
Sharing a series of singles over the course of the past year, the Chicago rapper rolled out the record with a birthday two-pack in the second installment of his EP, 2 Faced (May 30). Announcing GEMIN! with a two-part trailer days later, the album holds a total of 20 tracks and features from Lil Yachty, Future, Veeze and more. Its cover art features the blurred out faces of many famous Gemini, such as Donald Trump, 2Pac, Marilyn Monroe, Lauryn Hill and more.
As the debut offerings off of GEMIN!, 2-Faced, Pt. 2 touted “Heavy On My Heart” and the Brent Rambo-led “Courtesy Of.” “Heavy On My Heart” takes a more soulful approach to the signature woozy, off-kilter sounds LUCKI boasts. Bolstered by candid bars and a sample-clad instrumental from Coupe (known for his work with Kenny Mason and Young Nudy), the EP’s second offering “Courtesy Of” enlists longtime collaborator Brent Rambo for a victory lap worth the replay. The Chicago native’s half-awake flows sink through the sliding, ethereal production Rambo highlights, as LUCKI fills the void with a proclamation as the “top ski, slatt.”
Alongside prepping for his performance at Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash in Chicago (June 14-16), GEMIN! is another defining moment of LUCKI’s career. Off he back of solo albums like his breakout LP FLAWLESS LIKE ME and s*x m*ney dr*gs, the underground king bolstered his notoriety with Veeze on his album GANGER as well as with Southside on his latest single “Elegant.”
Much more is in store for LUCKI on his mainstream rise, encapsulating the energy a GEMINI should on his latest LP.
