Young Nudy feasts on new album ‘GUMBO’

Hungry? Let Chef Nudy cook.

“Big Bad Slime” brought forth a feast of anthems on Tuesday (Feb. 28), as Young Nudy’s latest LP GUMBO reasserts the Atlanta star’s impact on the city’s sound.

Following 2022’s EA Monster and his two-album run (Rich Shooter and DR. EV4L) in 2021, the rapper isn’t so much a superstar as he is a hometown hero. With a prolific output that displays his longevity and talent, his new 13-track effort showcases the breadth of the odd-ball emcee’s abilities — highlighted by tracks with 21 Savage (“Peaches & Eggplants”) and Key Glock (“Pot Roast”).

The food-themed record sees Nudy mix flows like mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving, as other tracks like “Shrimp,” “Portabella,” “McChicken” and “Fish & Chips” fill up starving fans that were waiting for another course from the ATL spitter. The record is majorly produced by Coupe — who worked closely with fellow Atlantan Kenny Mason on his latest mixtape RUFFS.

Ominous melodies, spacey 808s and menacing percussion define the versatile GUMBO, as Nudy’s off-kilter delivery and quirky persona give him an edge like no other. Championed by online rap fans, Nudy’s acclaim majorly derives from his undoubted range as a street rapper — using his infectious vocals to float over any track he touches. GUMBO is just the latest example of Nudy’s star power, warping and refining his soundscape for the better.

Amid a breach that saw over 200 vaulted songs leak last December, Nudy didn’t let that faze him — ultimately earning a Michelin star for his signature sonic GUMBO.
