The “Members Only” rapper is now in album mode, apparent with the surprise release of his latest track, “Ooga Booga.” It’s quirky as it is catchy, which is a duality that Ski Mask has been dominant in since his rise from the original SoundCloud era.
The silliness of the song’s title is not lost on Ski, with a ravenously bouncing beat and fast tempo unleashing him on an aggressively hilarious lyrical romp. That’s not to say you haven’t heard it before, with the track going absolutely insane on TikTok, with well over 250,000 videos using the song before it was officially released on Tuesday at midnight. (Oct. 25).
While the song just happens to have all the right ingredients for virality, the full version really expands upon the short snippet that’s been circulating around social media for weeks. Ski Mask’s idiosyncratic presence as a rapper is the highlight here, as his balance of zaniness and precision is remiscent of his biggest tracks, like “Catch Me Outside” and “Faucet Failure”
The “wassup” chorus satisfyingly sways from side-to-side, as Ski flexes his inflection that gives “Ooga Booga” the aggressively silly style that’s made it a hit before it’s even come out. Ski’s playful rhyme schemes fill the gaps between the popular snippet and the full song, further accentuating his wildly characteristic musical persona.
