“This is the Faygo we needed” and “old Faygo finally coming back” littered comment sections when SoFaygo dropped “YE” last month — returning to After Me form with his newest project GO+ on Wednesday (June 14).
After sharing the EP’s second track “WISH I COULD TELL YOU” with DD Osama (June 2), the Cactus Jack rapper brought forth 12 new tracks with a pair of features from DD and YSL wonder Yung Kayo (who appears on “Pure”). Osama is fresh off his debut album Here 2 Stay, while Kayo enjoyed time off following his birthday EP Nineteen.
Since the release of Pink Heartz in November 2022, Faygo jarred fans with a debut album filled with slower, cinematic tracks in place of the meditative rage the new wave star built his catalog on. Lead singles like “YE” and “WISH I COULD TELL YOU” not only served as a welcome reminder of Faygo’s new wave prowess, but restored his standing amongst doubters and those who forgot how the “Knock Knock” enigma made it here. Among early highlights like the long-teased “BEAUTIFUL ROCKSTAR,” rage-inducing “Havoc,” the BNYX-produced “On The Moon” and more, Faygo’s comeback feels of-the-moment and organic by staying within himself above all.
Stemming from his February two-pack EXTRA / 4ALLMYDAWGS, “YE” (produced by Bryceunknwn and Y2tnb — main contributors of the EP) sounds like an early 2020 banger with updated flair. “Wake up get cake, all work, no breaks (All work, no breaks, (Woo, breaks) / I kick slide, I feel like Ye (Ye, Ye),” Faygo tears off on the opening lines, shouting out the YZY mogul over spacey pianos and a simple trap bounce.
It feels like a SoundCloud time capsule of sorts, as Faygo flows with a high-pitched falsetto and a vocal stacked bridge that sees him “pull up and go to the moon.” “WISH I COULD TELL YOU” brings out the best in DD Osama (the “Justin Bieber of the rap game”), as the duo provide insight to their need for privacy on the emphatic banger. Kayo’s performance on “PURE” is a perfect pairing for Faygo’s auto-tuned, fast-paced delivery — contrasting with flashy bars and personality on the otherworldly, space synth intro.
Faygo’s EP was first revealed when Travis Scott and Cactus Jack took the stage during NBA All Star Weekend, as La Flame announced that UTOPIA would come after projects from Don Toliver, Sheck Wes and SoFaygo. It seems that now we’re in the homestretch, with Scott’s album reportedly slated for release at the end of June.
With GO+ reinstating Faygo’s pull in the underground, it’s best not to count out the Atlanta star for any reason whatsoever.
