Amid criticism, praise and everything in between, Tommy Richman‘s debut album COYOTE has been on the minds of fans since “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” shot to viral acclaim.
Sharing the record on Sept. 27, Richman keeps it short and sweet on his major label debut. At 11 tracks long and features from rising lyrical star mynameisntjack, Paco, Trevor Spitta and Zachary Moon, COYOTE precedes Tommy’s other full-length projects like SOULCRUSHER and his 2022 mixtape ALLIGATOR — and creates a dust storm of sounds.
On COYOTE, the DC native dives deeper into the alternative, blending R&B-funk grooves (a la Brent Faiyaz) and alt-rap since being signed to Faiyaz’s label, ISO Supremacy, earlier this year. Highlights like “GREEN THERAPY,” “TEMPTATIONS” and “LETTERMAN,” among others, showcase an evolution of Tommy’s ear — injected with glitchy funk-wave grooves and a one-of-one versatility that only he holds.
The album’s lead single, “THOUGHT YOU WERE THE ONE” is a luscious heartbreak anthem that details Tommy’s regrets for the one who got away. Another catchy track that features his high-pitched shrill and double-layered vocal stacks, Richman’s sound is in equal parts abrasive and ear-worming — which makes it all the more interesting. Its second single “WHITNEY” is more fun and upbeat, seemingly channeling (and perhaps interpolating) the soul of Whitney Houston on the chorus. Brash, 80s box drums collide with Richman’s signature falsetto — once again embodying the vibe he’s brought into the mainstream.
Despite the success of hit singles in “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” and “DEVIL IS A LIE,” Richman has opted to not include either track on COYOTE. An artist dedicated to gifting the game with a fresh yet nostalgic sound, Tommy looks to continue his stratospheric ascent since being named an undoubted Artist To Watch in 2024.
