If the Michael Jackson BAD inspired cover art wasn’t enough to tell you what “SELFISH” sounds like, Tommy Richman is pushing forward by taking things back.
“Music just don’t sound like this no more,” one X user wrote to describe one of his new singles, doubling down on this nostalgic energy by dropping a longtime grail “MILLION DOLLAR BABY.” The two new tracks—shared within a week of one another—continue to roll out the DMV rising star’s debut studio album COYOTE. The project is due out later this year, as Richman ignited its rollout with his two-track EP, SOULCRUSHER, in February.
“MILLION DOLLAR BABY,” long-teased by Richman, has catapulted to widespread acclaim in recent weeks, opening with over 20 Million streams upon its official release April 26. At one moment, the song reached No. 1 on Apple Music and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 (May 11), which is Richman’s first-ever placement on the chart.
If you weren’t familiar with the 2024 Artist To Watch, Tommy Richman has become an underground force now trailblazing his way through mainstream circuits. However, he’s anything but an overnight sensation.
Signing to Brent Faiyaz’s ISO Supremacy collective—which was announced through stellar features on Faiyaz’s LARGER THAN LIFE mixtape in 2023—Tommy’s sound is tinged with nostalgia and utter coolness, showcasing his ability to weave between electro-R&B and alternative sounds with ease.
Groovy basslines, ghostly vocal stacks and infectious hooks are Tommy’s forte (peep the sneaky Luigi’s Mansion sample on the viral “GHOSTS N GHOULS”), and with COYOTE looming closer, expect more signature sauce from the DMV’s Rich kid in due time.
