G Herbo memorializes his late brother on ‘Locked In’

Chicago rapper G Herbo has slowly become an integral piece to hip-hop lore in recent years. With his matter-of-fact delivery and vivid story-telling ability, his 2021 album 25 continues to make waves for the rapstar in 2022 — staying “Locked In” on a new tribute track for his late-brother, Gregory Jackson.

Gregory, also known as Lil Greg, unexpectedly passed away in early 2021 from a shooting at his local barbershop. His passing was a major loss for Herbo, as he was a close childhood friend and motivator for the “Who Run It” rapper.

“I was in a slump (Was in a slump)

Ever since I lost my brother, I’ve been gettin’ drunk

Slowly crawlin’ out the hump, shit got me fucked up, mentally

Any nigga play with me, I dump, physically

Everywhere I be, we keep a couple Glocks tucked

I ain’t hard to see, I’m in that double-R truck”

Soulful vocal samples overlap each other as bumping 808s blast on Herbo’s latest single “Locked In.” He tells anecdotes about his grief, dropping bars about his struggles with loss and the environment that led to Greg’s murder.

With recent appearances on tracks with Gunna, Saba, NLE Choppa and Babyface Ray, Herbo has had more features in the first month of 2022 than most rappers get in a whole year. As we head into the the spring, it will be interesting to see what Herbo tackles next.
