Over a decade in the game and K CAMP is still one of them ones.
Newly independent and freshly energized, K CAMP has exceeded all expectations since embarking on his indie journey last year.
Feeding the pent-up demand from his hungry fanbase with new singles and selling out tour dates across the country, the success of his solo Pretty Ones tour culminated with a new 6-track EP, Spin The Block, on Friday (May 26).
Produced entirely in-house by his crew of RARE Sound producers, Spin The Block is the perfect introduction to the new era of K CAMP. Sticking with the theme of independence, the less-is-more production throughout comes courtesy of his go-to guys Bobby Kritical, Keyman and TrappinInLondon — and even himself on “New Season Marni.”
Across the tape, which is named after the title track fans have been clamoring for, Camp feels confident and wholly unpressed to follow the trendy sounds of the day. Instead, he infuses his iconic signature sound with the calmness that comes with independent success, as he effortlessly switches between laidback rap flows and silky smooth melodies.
The EP’s 6 tracks read almost like a guide for how to move in 2023, with songs titled after rapper essentials from buss downs to 5% tint to the newest designer fashion. Float details the tricks of the trade he’s learned over his tenure, touching on everything from his expert-level player ways to moving like a superstar. He even hits a more somber note on “Buss Down,” echoing his grandmother’s warning of “you can lose your life over a buss down” as he pays respect to the fallen PnB Rock and Pop Smoke — two modern-day legends who were tragically killed in robbery attempts targeting their jewelry.
When it comes to K CAMP, he truly is a singular figure in the game who has managed to float through the last decade on the back of his unique, vibey trap sound, self-sufficient approach and seemingly endless hits. From early 2010s, hits like “Money Baby” and “Cut Her Off,” to “Lottery (Renegade)” — otherwise known as the viral hit that set off the TikTok dance craze — there is a very short list of artists who have managed to remain relevant from the Blog Era to the TikTok era and beyond.
Whether he’s linking with Bronx drill frontrunner B-Lovee for a Jersey-Club infused single, or shouting out freshly minted stars like Playboi Carti, Peezy and Coi Leray on Spin the Block, despite his decade-plus in the game K CAMP is still one of the cool kids. With his newfound independence in-hand and off to a great start, there is plenty left to see from one of our generation’s longest-standing hitmakers.
