Lil Yachty ventures further left with new tracks ‘Something Ether,’ ‘stayinit’

Lil Yachty has become hip-hop’s resident risk taker, embodying the sentiment of “adapt or die” in each of his recent releases.

While Let’s Start Here was the catalyst for it all, the Atlanta rapper — who, in all fairness, is more than an emcee at this stage of his career — continues to venture further into left field. Whether it’s the cool, laid-back flows on the sample-clad “A COLD SUNDAY” or the blitzing array of techno-FX and distorted synths on “SOMETHING ETHER,” Boat is operating in a league of his own — and doesn’t care if you love him or hate him for it.

His latest single “stayinit” with electronic icons Fred Again.. and Overmono further encapsulates Yachty’s palatability for all audiences — and will surely be heard in clubs as summertime looms near. His versatility as an artist should not be understated; he’s morphed into an alt-rap anamoly fit for any sonic space in just over 12 months. But still, Boat can get in his bag whenever he pleases. To him, it’s all about pushing himself and his music forward.

“The state of hip-hop right now is a lot of imitation. It’s a lot of quick, low-quality music being put out,” Lil Yachty told Rolling Stone last year. “It’s a lot less risk-taking, it’s a lot less originality… People are too safe now. I rather take the risk than take the L.”

You can’t dismiss how he’s redefining what a rapper can be in 2024; It’s not only admirable, but hopeful in how he’s pushed the envelope for future creatives looking to follow in his footsteps. He’s firming the mold; executing a non-linear path to overarching greatness and prioritizing his legacy above all.

While some of these new efforts might be an “L” in the eyes of longtime Yachty fans, Boat would rather fall flat on his face trying some new rather than play it safe. His forthcoming collab album with James Blake, titled BAD CAMEO, is more fuel for Yachty’s side quest into alternative sounds — which has evidently become his full focus.

Boat’s the main character music needed, even if he’s seen as this proverbial anti-hero who disrupts the norm and refuses to be complacent.
