Soundcloud OG Warhol.ss reemerged from the shadows last week to drop off three new bangers with his new EP 3PEAT — including the official release of “Deuce & Fanta,” his killer collab with Detroit’s Babyface Ray.
Warhol is one of the longest-standing and most respected veterans of the Soundcloud era, known for combining the vibey production and DIY approach of the new wave with the gritty, streetwise feel of his native Chicago.
While Warhol has been relatively quiet in recent years, the new 3-pack is an absolute home run. And luckily for fans, he also seems to be hinting there is more to come, telling OGM: “I’m going back to back with this shit. It’s Warhol Season. Period.”
For such a short tape, 3PEAT shows an incredibly wide range across three songs, not to mention his unique creative vision at the intersection of Soundcloud and the streets that’s made Warhol a staple in the underground since at least 2017.
This week he dropped a video for “I Hate N****s”, where he sounds in peak form over a vibey, lightly drill-flipped sampling of Kanye’s iconic “Devil in a New Dress” (prod by Mayday) – contrasting the production’s gentle melody with his unorthodox flow, gritty bars, and captivating raspy delivery that manages to be both energetic and laidback at the same time.
The opening track, “Mob Shit” showcases interestingly layered production (prod by Wiardon) that juxtaposes an eerie, Detroit-type beat with a jazzy saxophone.
While the competition is steep, “Deuce & Fanta” is the clear standout from the tape. Originally released in May, and now finally on DSPs with the release of 3PEAT, Warhol.ss and Babyface Ray make for a majorly dynamic duo on their first collab.
The song and the visual perfectly capture the two artists from different worlds connecting on the same wavelength, both managing to sound right at home on an insane beat produced by Brent Rambo and Peyton the Alien despite their differing flows. Face said best himself when the original video released: “Me & Warhol Clicked quick like the bulls when Rodman came!!”
For one of the first times on “Deuce & Fanta,” Face and Warhol successfully bridge the Soundcloud underground and the understated smooth-talking (debatably offbeat) subsection of gangster rap – two of the most compelling and fastest growing new trends in hip-hop today. In addition to their obvious chemistry, they’ve hinted at additional joint tracks coming down the line – even debuting their very own handshake in the music video.
Overall, 3PEAT is yet another hugely successful outing from one of the most seasoned underground veterans in the game. He said himself that he’s ready to go “back to back with this shit,” so hopefully this is just a preview for what’s to come.
