Following an exciting snippet released earlier this year in August, previewing the link-up between the promising new wave phenom and one of the most successful ‘first wave’ Soundcloud veterans, “Better Float 2” arrived on Thursday (Oct. 6) and it didn’t disappoint.
The original release of “Better Float” was a big moment for Highway, introducing his captivating hybrid style to a wider audience with an undeniable hit incorporating elements of trap, the new wave, and R&B as he contemplates the implications of his high-flying lifestyle. The song’s haunting production and punching drums (prod by Xjay) immediately reel listeners in on the first listen, only to be blown away by Highway’s intense delivery and raspy melodic vocal reminiscent of what Future might sound like as an introspective new wave artist.
“Better Float 2” is another big moment for Highway as it marks his biggest co-sign yet. Following the hint at a collaboration in August, this week fans finally got to hear Trippie’s legendary vocal over the iconic “Better Float” beat – perfectly contrasting Highway’s eerily deep baritone with a dynamic melodic verse as he takes listeners through his full range of emotive deliveries.
Over the last year Highway has been on a steady upward trajectory, bubbling below the surface as one of the underground’s best-kept secrets before officially announcing his arrival as Victor Victor’s newest signee early this year with the arrival of his self-titled debut project.
Since then, he’s kept his foot on the gas with new releases like “No Guitar” and a string of turnt-up live performances – most recently in his hometown of Seattle alongside Lancey Foux and Joony – showcasing the demand for his unique sound and magnetic presence. As if that wasn’t enough, he’s already announced his next EP Livin Like That set to drop sometime this fall.
Highway’s star power is increasingly obvious, and as new fans and more big names begin to catch wind it’s only a matter of time before he hits the mainstream.
