Trippie Redd is testing the waters before dropping A Love Letter To You 5, sharing a new teaser EP titled First Draft on Friday (Sept. 30).
After releasing its lead single “Big 14” with Moneybagg Yo and Offset in August, the Ohio emcee let fans back into the softer, more melodic side to his sound via two new tracks: “Save Me Please” and “1st Degree Murder.”
The two-pack is definitely a departure from Trippie’s recent output. Moving away from the energy of “Big 14” and dizzying Trip at Knight, First Draft is sure to be an appetizer for the historically love-torn ALLTY5 — and a nice change of pace for longtime fans.
Seeing a resurgence in Redd’s classic emo-rap bag, the EP is filled with finger-picked guitar strings, narrative lyricism and ear-worming vocals. Its opener, “Save Me, Please,” has been clipped in snippets since 2019, touting bars about Trippie being tired of the pain and agony he suffers daily and the love he has for his significant other. “1st Degree Murder” builds off this theme of tattered love while protecting the other half of his relationship.
It’s gon’ be murder in the first degree
If I hear ’em talkin down on your name
Then I’m pullin’ up and flyin’ away
Baby, I don’t play ’bout you and me
It’s gon’ be murder in the first degree
And it don’t matter if you’re far away
Just bang my line and I’m on the way
You know I don’t play ’bout you and me
It’s gon’ be murder in the first degree
“1st Degree Murder” — Trippie Redd
Although he’s shared only three tracks in 2022, Trippie is having quite the year on the road. Big 14 performed at both Rolling Loud Miami and Toronto, also appearing at Summer Sky Vol. 1. Additionally, he opened a few venues on Machine Gun Kelly’s “Mainstream Sellout Tour” and is currently hosting his own string of tour dates overseas.
Eagerly waiting on ALLTY5, Trippie’s latest pack was the snack fans needed to hold them over for the album.
