After teasing fans with new music earlier this summer, Ab-Soul reemerged from the stars with his second new track of 2022 in “Moonshooter.”
On the surface, it seems that the TDE lyricist is back in classic form, as Soul floats alongside the track’s fleeting, ghostly instrumental with ease. He raps about how he decorates his music with his emotions and feelings and emphasizes the stories he puts into his work.
Soul contrasts these thoughts lamenting that people may not actually care about the tales he tells. On the hook, he still looks to the positive side and reminds listeners that he still is the philosophical wordsmith he’s always been.
“Shoot for the moon and keep a gun around
In the world so cold at least sun is out
Live in my mind I am question everything
To that point I don’t know what to think”
Ab-Soul – “Moonshooter”
“Moonshooter” comes a few months after Soul’s initial comeback track “Hollandaise.” The song was initially expected to be the lead single for his still-unnamed fifth studio album — that was to be dropped sometime in the summer — yet, summer flew by and so did any potential release date. With this brand new track and a confirmation post coming straight from TDE, it seems as though Soulo season is finally upon us.
“Moonshooter” follows fellow TDE releases like ScHoolboy Q’s “Soccer Dad” and Kendrick Lamar’s final TDE album Mr Morale & The Big Steppers. It comes just a few weeks after Soulo linked up with Watts rapper Daylyt for his latest track “Populour.”
It has been a long six years since Soulo’s last album Do What Thou Wilt dropped and fans have been starving for new Soul. Now, that long wait may finally be over once more news of his latest masterpiece rolls out in the coming weeks.
