Babyface Ray is far from a rookie and it shows.
With “All Star Team,” Babyface Ray bookends his hugely successful national tour alongside fellow Motown MVP Veeze (and very special guest Shawny Binladen) – with the track’s upbeat production from Face-staple Space providing the perfect opportunity to break out the celebratory Milwaukee disco fingers.
The new single follows up “Ron Artest” with fellow Detroit native 42 Dugg, which quickly became one Ray’s biggest-ever releases since it dropped in February.
There’s no doubt that Babyface Ray is one of the hottest things moving, with his nonchalant swag and confidently unorthodox flows already starting to set a new standard for what is cool. As evidenced by the massive demand that met him and the gang in every city of his recent ‘Courtesy of the Mob’ tour – and the rocket ship ride to the forefront that Veeze has experienced – Detroit has the streets.
In addition to the streets, Face has also been declaring the “Summers Mine,” with an easter egg in the music video suggesting there may be a project on the way with that title. While much of the music out of the Motor City is dark and gritty, the light and upbeat vibe of “All Star Team” is perfect for the approaching summer and feels like a well-deserved victory lap after experiencing the full extent of his reach. That mood is reflected in the Kardiak-directed video, where Face and the gang can be seen dancing, throwing money, and enjoying the company of a gaggle of enthusiastic dancers.
Instantly recognizable by the “I just need my Space right now” tag, Billboard-charting producer Space is definitely one of the secret weapons on the All Star Team. Having produced some of the most memorable Babyface Ray hits over the years from “Addy” to “What the Business Is” to “Crazy World,” his knack for turning unusual sounds into catchy unorthodox bangers came through yet again for “All Star Team.”
In light of the theme of the song, its worth noting the rest of the all star team that’s assembled around Face: from rockstar manager Baroline, to engineer Sharif, to director Kardiak Films, to his all-star lineup of producers like Space, Pooh Beatz, and more that have helped shape his unorthodox sound and propel him the national stage.
Not to mention he’s also putting on for the home team, whether its helping to elevate his right-hand man Veeze into the city’s next superstar or shining a light on a new generation of Detroit talent like Talibando, DaeMoney, and more.
It’s been pretty incredible to watch over the few years as Babyface Ray has transformed from a fringe cult-favorite into a genuine mainstream star – able to claim the title of “your-favorite-rappers-favorite-rapper” more than just about anyone at this point. While some people have surely yet to acquire the taste for his particular sound, there’s really no stopping Face as he continues to step into his role as a modern day Motor City legend.
