DC The Don on ‘REBIRTH’: “People will get the best version of me”

REBIRTH is looming closer for DC The Don, and his latest singles “GOD LEVEL” and “BEST FRIEND ONLY” embody the attitude he has heading into his next era.

Fresh off the success of his viral ‘Song Wars’ victory on Plaqueboymax’s stream last month, capturing the panel and fans alike with the energetic “VENUS,” Donny’s latest efforts are the true first look into his REBIRTH era.

Focusing on high-quality drops, “GOD LEVEL” sounds like it’s from a higher power, littered with experimentation both vocally and on the production. Alarming synths and vocal slides meet mosh-pitting raps and growling 808s, akin with the Milwaukee rapper’s RAG3 KID persona. However, it’s more calculated, controlled and darker than any of Donny’s previous glistening yet glitchy efforts.

“BEST FRIEND ONLY” sees DC back in his twinkling love song bag, brooding with emotion for a flame outside of the friend zone. Upbeat, island vibes and pulsating percussion allow Donny’s voice to sit just on the edge of rapping and singing — a common theme on past full-length efforts, but especially REBIRTH. It sounds complete and evidently builds off of the pop-leant sound sprinkled throughout FUNERAL.

Even DC knows that “VENUS,” “BEST FRIEND ONLY” and “GOD LEVEL” are the pegs to a potent run in 2024, especially with the follow-up to FUNERAL eyeing its release on Oct. 23. “People are starting to realize that everything I’m dropping is high quality. My fans knew that but I think now exposure is different,” he said. “I think that moment [with ‘VENUS’] allowed people to understand that when people hear from me it won’t be some bullshit.”

Staying consistent this year with his EP 2012 and hopping on “FIRE” with Midwxst, know that his debut album REBIRTH will be one of, if not Donny’s best album yet. We quickly caught up with DC over text to check in on the project, speak on his latest singles in “VENUS,” “GOD LEVEL” and more.

A quick catch-up with Donny…

JB: “VENUS” saw a lot of traction online, especially with it being played and winning song wars on plaqueboymax’s stream recently… what’s been the reception from fans and peers alike regarding the official release of VENUS?

DC: People are starting to realize that everything I’m dropping is high quality. My fans knew that but I think now exposure is different. I think that moment allowed people to understand that when people hear from me it won’t be some bullshit.

JB: How did that moment with Max come about?

DC: Max DM’d me while I was getting a tattoo and decided to be a part of it. l rushed back to the crib to play the song.

JB: REBIRTH, from what I’ve heard, is your most experimental project yet. Can you tell me how GOD LEVEL previews what’s to come on the album? Explain what “GOD LEVEL” means in your own words, what does the track represent to you?

DC: “GOD LEVEL” shows the attitude of the album. In many ways it’s the heart of the album. Just a level of not giving a f*** about what mufuk*** think about the project, That’s why I chose “GOD LEVEL” as the lead single. Obviously “VENUS” had to come out before hand because of ‘Song Wars’ but “GOD LEVEL” was the great introduction — it was abrasive and ugly even tho its perfectly crafted…. The song represents self empowerment, the hook makes you feel otherwise but the record makes you feel like a god.

JB: What can you say about REBIRTH: how many songs, any features? What can fans expect from this new era of DC The Don?

DC: People will get the best version of me with this next album, it’s real and unexpected. It’s evolved. REBIRTH is the big brother that puts his lil brother [previous albums] in a chokehold.

Stay tuned for more with DC The Don as ‘REBIRTH’ nears release.
