Hip-hop legend DJ Drama has been curating top-tier tracks for the better part of 20 years, bringing out the best in countless artists over his legendary, extensive career.
His legacy is clearly still important to him as his latest single “Forever” confirms his dedication to the rap game alongside Fabolous, Benny the Butcher, Jim Jones and Capella Grey.
Drama and DJ Kay Slay start things off with a quick monologue before Capella drops a melodic R&B hook over the nostalgic instrumental. Fab, Benny and Jim each rap about the lessons they learned coming up in the streets and music industry, reflecting on their respective success with unsurprisingly elite flows.
“Crack rock and jump shot, that’s how my guys did it
So you either a Guy Fisher or Kawhi Leonard
I felt like both when I stacked my first five digits
Now I’m the coach who used to play, nigga, I’m Doc Rivers
Learn from the streets, be a student for the day
Disrespect when the team wait for you to run a play
Put a brick in your trap or a shooter on your face
Versace hangin’ off my bitch like a Superwoman cape”
Benny the Butcher — “Forever” by DJ Drama
This has been a fruitful year for DJ Drama as he comes off the success of his Dreamville collaboration, hosting their D-Day mixtape on his Gangsta Grillz imprint. This East Coast crew cut marks his first single as a lead artists since 2019’s “Nasty” featuring Moneybagg Yo and PnB Rock.
All four featured artists have been equally busy this year, with the most notable of releases being Benny the Butcher’s Tana Talk 4 as well as Jim Jones’ Gangsta Grillz mixtape We Set the Trends.
It’s currently unclear if this is a one-off track from Drama or if we will finally receive his next full-length album after 2016’s Quality Street Music 2. Regardless of their plans with this release, Gangsta Grillz and DJ Drama are sure to be all over the place this year hosting projects from some of our favorite artists.
