Just about two months away from the one-year anniversary of his most recent studio album Expensive Pain, Meek Mill is hoping to open the floodgates and let his vaulted music free.
On Wednesday (July 27), the Philly phenom tweeted about his desire to release an astounding 10 new mixtapes this fall, beginning in September. This plan likely stems from his dispute with his label at Atlantic Records earlier this year, as he could look to put these tapes out for free and bypass his deal with them.
To begin this quest for “independence,” Meek is determined for his first release, likely a single, to be on August 18, the anniversary of his father’s death. This should get the ball rolling for Meek, as he does not plan for his mixtapes to be released at midnight ET on Fridays like typical albums are.
The timing of this bold decision should not come as a surprise, considering he recently ended his management deal with Roc Nation in hopes of taking charge of his business agenda.
While these mixtapes will probably not land on digital streaming platforms, it is not confirmed what service Meek will employ. In February, while waging war with Atlantic, he had hinted at the idea of releasing future mixtapes on a blockchain similar to an NFT. This idea coincided with the launch of his new Discord channel, as an easier way to community with fans and show them music he had been working on.
Ultimately, we’ll just have to wait and see exactly what Meek’s approach will be. But, either way, it seems that we will be getting loads of new music from the Dreamchasers head honcho.
