The Weeknd enlists Summer Walker for dynamic ‘Best Friends’ remix

Ever since the release of The Weeknd‘s latest LP Dawn FM, still regarded as one of the top albums of the year, the XO captain has been providing numerous remixes for songs from the project.

Remixes for “Out Of Time,” “Starry Eyes,” “Dawn FM” and “How Do I Make You Love Me?” saw instrumentalists like KAYTRANADA and Mike Dean, among others, put their magic touch on Dawn FM tracks. Now, Abel decided it was time to bring another R&B icon into the fold.

On Aug. 5, Summer Walker hopped on the remix for album’s ninth song “Best Friends,” which had already eclipsed 59 million Spotify streams.

Ahead of the release, Abel emphasized how well Summer performed on this new version, joking that she “carried the song.” While the first half of the remix only includes the original hook, verse and bridge that The Weeknd used in first rendition, Summer Walker dominates every aspect of the second half on this rendition, just like Abel foretold.

After a second performance of the hook where Summer adds subtle vocals, her brand new subsequent verse and performance of the bridge are stunning, as she perfectly aligns her lyricism with the song’s message about a messy situationship.

Tryna turn the time back

Keep it as a friendship, we already tried that

When you gonna face it?

We’re on the other side

“Best Friends (Remix)” — The Weeknd, Summer Walker

Both sharing vocals on the final rendition of the “You’re my best friend now” hook, Abel and Summer cap off what is likely the best remixed song off of Dawn FM. The way in which The Weeknd’s last two album have been rolled out and promoted has been a sight to behold, as he has been blessing his fans since early 2020.
