Enter the world of CHROMAKOPIA with open eyes and an open mind.
After a swift two-week rollout, Tyler, The Creator has triumphantly dropped his eighth album, CHROMAKOPIA, right on cue.
Sharing singles in “NOID” and “THOUGHT I WAS DEAD,” the 14-track album features a slew of hidden guest appearances. Upon listening, collaborators such as Childish Gambino, Teezo Touchdown, Doechii, ScHoolBoy Q, Daniel Caesar, GloRilla, Sexyy Red and Lil Wayne, among others, pop out from the hidden tracklist. Playboi Carti also has a verse on “THOUGHT I WAS DEAD,” exclusively available on the album’s vinyl version.
Despite only four days of chart tracking, CHROMAKOPIA earned a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 299,000 first-week units. This marks the highest sales week of Tyler’s career and one of the highest sales weeks hip-hop has seen in 2024. CHROMAKOPIA is Tyler’s third consecutive No. 1 album, following CMIYGL and IGOR. Interestingly, Tyler is also the only rapper to have albums debut at No. 1 in every year from 2021-2024. See here. It’s Tyler’s longest-running No. 1 album of his career, staying atop the chart for three weeks straight.
Highlights like “Darling, I” with Teezo, “Rah Tah Tah,” “Judge Judy,” “Take Your Mask Off” and more, Tyler’s new album is personal in approach and colorful in sound. Centered around conversations with his mother, which are sparsed as skits throughout the album, Tyler finds himself reflecting on his life as he continues to get older and mature in his mid-30s. Holding a special CHROMAKOPIA listening event in Los Angeles last night, Tyler spoke on these changes and his perspective heading into this record.
“People are getting older. Folks having kids and families. And all I got is a new Ferrari and it does feel kind of weird after a while,” he said. “I’m gaining weight. I got a grey hair on my chest… Life is life-ing and I don’t know, I just wanted to kind of just write about stuff that I think about when I’m dolo.”
Released at 6 a.m. EST Monday (Oct. 28), Tyler’s advocated to drop music at the top of the week instead of New Music Friday for awhile now. In an interview with Nardwuar last year, the GOLF le FLEUR maestro explained why he feels dropping an album during the week provides a more natural listening experience. “I think it’s a lot of passive listening [on the weekend],” he said. “If you put it out during the week… you really have that time to ‘dive in’ and really listen.”
In the midst of CHROMAKOPIA’s rollout, Tyler announced the lineup to Camp Flog Gnaw’s 10-year anniversary carnival, which touted performances from Playboi Carti, Andre 3000, Lil Yachty & Concrete Boyz, Kenny Mason, Denzel Curry and much more. The festival took place Nov. 16-17 in Los Angeles.
The creator is also set to hit the road with Lil Yachty and Paris Texas on the CHROMAKOPIA World Tour at the start of 2025. Stretching from February to September, the seven month-long tour visits cities such as Washington DC, St. Paul, Chicago, Boston, New York, Austin, Portland as well as Dublin, Milan, Sydney, London, Amsterdam and more.
