While Bear1Boss and SoFaygo set the underground ablaze on their own, coming together seemed like a “conscious” decision.
A cultural moment worth the hype, Bear and Faygo’s latest collab “conscious” is everything longtime fans needed it to be. Produced by Project, Filip and Beancoco, the Atlanta natives have cultivated a revitalization of the area’s sound in recent years — most notably Bear, who’s championed a futuristic, experimental sound coming out of ATL.
Blitzing 808s and fast auto-tuned bars paint a picture of both rappers’ flow states, playing off one another effortlessly on the near 2-minute long cut. Echoed, sliding synths and distortion are the driving forces of “conscious” — allowing both Bear and Faygo to thrive in their natural sonic element.
Its coinciding visual (directed by Jelani Miller & Darko) showcases the pair in a peach mansion maze with gorgeous women walking past them. Rotating eyes, whirly staircases and steep holes fill the desert-colored set, as Bear and Faygo turn up within each cascading frame. The minimalistic video complements the set perfectly — feeding into the crazy “conscious” allure of the song. Faygo stacks up another powerful feature appearance, riding the wave of GO+ and “WHAT YOU WANT” at the back end of 2023. Following his debut album, Pink Heartz, in 2022, fans were happy to see Faygo return to more a energetic, ethereal sound found on his latest efforts.
Additionally, “conscious” is the lead single off Bear1Boss’ latest project SUPERBOSS (Feb. 12). Featuring SoFaygo, dirt, SPINZ and JELEEL!, the 11-track mixtape bolsters Bear1Boss’ undeniable hold as the underground’s go-to trendsetter. Not to mention his viral moment, when he and Playboi Carti first met each other in detainment, Bear’s uniquely colorful and plugg-inspired essence continues to support his calling as hip-hop’s future torchbear(er).
