When R&B superstar Brent Faiyaz said Fuck The World in February 2020, the world stopped and stared at what he brought forth: an entrancing, detailed escapade of lust, legacy and the unruly cost for the price of fame.
Since then, Faiyaz has aged into one of music’s most sought-after artists. Off the back of projects in Lost EP and his beloved 2017 debut album Sonder Son, Faiyaz not only has transcended genre with his angelic voice, but curates an immersively unique experience in his music. Simply put, no track sounds the same, as Faiyaz looks to end the year off strong with his latest single “MERCEDES.”
Posting “WASTELAND 12.03.21” on Nov. 14, the generational singer teased the single via Instagram earlier this week. Faiyaz asked fans for 30,000 comments in which he would then share the new track, garnering over 20,000 comments in 12 minutes. He delivered shortly after, posting a snippet on IGTV titled “Ugotit,” which later revealed itself to be “MERCEDES.”
“MERCEDES” is Faiyaz in his final form — floating over the track’s ethereal yet hard-hitting production with ease. Speaking on topics found all throughout his discography, Faiyaz crafts an end of year banger jumpstarting Wasteland’s eventual release.
Following his Fuck the World era — as the 10-track project earned critical reception all around — Faiyaz is looking towards his next chapter after a prolific 2021. Linking up with Tyler, The Creator on “SWEET / I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO DANCE” off his Grammy-nominated album Call Me If You Get Lost as well as their single “Gravity” with DJ Dahi, the enigmatic singer also bolstered his year with his viral hit “Dead Man Walking,” “lost souls” with Baby Keem, “Found” with rising African star Tems and “Wasting Time” with Drake.
He also shared a sultry, uplifting single “Show U Off” earlier this year, which could very well land on his next project. Faiyaz has yet to officially announce if Wasteland is a true album release, however, any new music from Brent Faiyaz is a treat — regardless of what he shares to the masses.
While Fuck The World elevated him to the greatest of heights, Faiyaz’s next project is poised to become an instant classic. With hype on his side — remaining mysterious through it all — Faiyaz looks to rebuild or tear down the Wasteland he resides in.
