All throughout 2022, a collaboration between redveil and Denzel Curry was becoming more and more inevitable. Along with Curry literally telling us he and veil “got a song that’s about to come out” during our August interview, the duo had also been on the road together for two different legs of the “Melt My Eyez Tour” from April to October.
But, instead of crafting an original song, veil decided it would be best if Zel hopped on the standout song from his April album learn 2 swim. Just recently submitted for Grammy consideration, l2s saw a step up in terms of both lyricism and production from redveil, and “pg baby” epitomized this progress perfectly.
As one of the most celebrated tracks of the year in hip-hop, Curry’s addition to the track was much more than just a new verse. Released on Oct. 25, the “pg baby” remix sees veil employ the same intro, first verse and “Bitch, I can’t trip ’bout shit ’cause I’ve fallen” hook that takes up the entire original version of the song.
However, this first rendition of the hook transitions gracefully into a fresh hook from Curry, where he delivers fitting bars about “swimming good through my stream of consciousness” and repping his hometown Zone 3, Carol City. Closing his verse by proclaiming “You don’t wanna drown in this wave, throw your hands up,” Curry makes way for another performance of veil’s hook that bleeds into a revamped outro sung by the tandem.
Contextualized with Zel’s recent, jazzy Melt My Eyez See Your Future: The Expanded Edition last month, his groovy, sung “I can tell you ain’t about to win, shawty” refrain to close out this remix only makes sense.
Including footage of veil on tour with Curry, scenes shot at their tour-ending celebration from earlier this month and shots of Zel taking a visit to the PG County-bred rapper’s high school back home, the visuals for the remix perfectly recap a groundbreaking year.
veil’s career has continuously seen him garner co-signs from is rap idols, whether it be Tyler, The Creator reposting his music, Freddie Gibbs taking him on tour or now, Denzel Curry hopping on a track with him. Ultimately, it’s clear that this “PG baby never settled.”
