There’s nothing better than hearing vintage Trippie Redd in 2023. Ahead of a long-awaited debut project from Zzz, the Grade A rising star and Mansion Musik rapper connect on “Sad & Alone” — a swooning medley of emo-rap bliss.
Powered by contemplative, love-torn guitars, Zzz and Trippie’s chemistry is off the charts from the jump. “You got my heart decaying, I can’t explain it / Even when you’re far away,” Trippie gutturally croons on the hook, garnering greater hype for the fifth installment of his A Love Letter To You album series.
Zzz follows suit with his patented brand of longing emo-rap, emphatically singing on the back of the hook, “these girls are all the same / You’re a noose with your love, you always leave me hanging. Striving to “numb the pain” amid feeling “Sas & -“Alone,” Z’s latest effort feels more special and tailor-made than most Trippie Redd features as of late — compelenting each other’s strengths to the fullest.
Adding another influential co-sign early in his career, the Lil Bibby-signed protégé is well on his way to becoming the face of emo-rap’s future. Performing a handful of unreleased tracks at Rolling Loud this past March, the Florida singer-rapper continues to rack up hits in his vault, which holds over 500 songs and counting. “Definitely a project is coming soon,” he told us at Rolling Loud California. “We’re being careful of how we’re moving, making sure the tracks we pick are the right ones. Slowly but surely, it’s coming.” “Sad & Alone” follows the “Running Away” talent’s debut single “All I Never Wanted” and December 2022 two-pack A Gift And A Curse.
Although news of Redd’s A Love Letter To You 5 made headlines last October, snippets have been the 1400 star’s major play in recent months. Sharing an album teaser in First Draft — a two-pack of melancholic bangers that embody Redd’s historic essence — fans can expect new music from him sometime this year, presumably keeping ALLTY’s theme of Fall releases. Trippie also shared the feature-heavy Mansion Musik in January — admitting he put out the record due to hackers holding him for “ransom” in an interview with Zane Lowe.
As far as crafting timeless tear-jerking anthems, Zzz and Trippie Redd couldn’t be a better one-two punch.
