Off the back of her debut album Modus Vivendi (2020) and previous 2021 singles in “Neo Surf” and “Lose My Cool,” 070 returned to shake up the game with “Skin And Bones” (April 22) — the lead single off her long-awaited sophomore album, YOU CAN’T KILL ME.
Revealing the cover art and release date (June 3) for her upcoming LP on May 4, Shake also dropped the album’s second single “Web” alongside the announcement. Now, she’s back for another round with her third single “Body” featuring Christine and the Queens, released on May 20.
Her forthcoming record holds a total of 14 tracks, as “Body” is a continuation of the ethereal soundscape she’s creating for her second studio album. “Web” sees the New Jersey wordsmith picking up where she left off on “Skin And Bones,” questioning her love interest’s implications crooning, “if I let you drive hours here for me… I think we should stop right here,” the track’s percussionless vibe provides fans with another heavenly, atmospheric cut from Shake’s vault.
On the other hand, her lead single “Skin And Bones” is both parts a loving slow jam and cinematic banger, as Shake meshes the track’s ethereal synths and progressive production with her swooning, ghostly vocals — further proving her ability to transport listeners with an otherworldly aura.
“And we spoke in past tense / Reminisce ’bout back when our spirits used to dance with each other,” she hypnotically sing-raps, speaking on how her lover treats her more than just “skin and bones.” Finding solace in always being there “whichever way we go,” the music video, directed by Noah Lee, is equally as surreal — as Shake saunters through a storm of different degrees before standing idle in an auditorium where a surprise is revealed.
“Life will take its toll
But whichever way we go
Know I’m right here by your side, shawty
Skin and bones under the covers
Kept our love undercover
Nonchalant, very subtle
Tryin’ not to step on the puddle”070 Shake — “Skin And Bones”
While she’s been hard at work finishing YOU CAN’T KILL ME, Shake seems to have lent her voice to fellow YZY Sound signee KayCyy’s next record. As his debut album Who Is KayCyy? slowly approaches, she recently appeared in KayCyy’s latest vlog “24 Hours In Milan.” In the video, the pair are seen bouncing ideas off one another and working in the studio, perhaps creating multiple tracks for each of their respective projects.
In light of the new singles, 070 Shake’s 2022 tour is set to kick off May 7 in Detroit. Other stops include Chicago, New York City, Toronto, Houston and Phoenix before finishing with a four-night residency at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre in June. Tickets are currently available for purchase at Ticketmaster.
YOU CAN’T KILL ME is expected to release on June 3, as Shake’s “Body,” “Web” and “Skin And Bones” are the perfect offerings to capture listeners’ — both new and old — hearts and attention.
