After taking the last few years to focus on retooling his craft, Chicago mainstay Chance the Rapper is back with a new sound and an entire aesthetic to match.
Joined by Ghana-born singer King Promise, Chano channels his most artistic self on “YAH KNOW,” going all out with this release by directing and starring in its incredible out-at-sea visual.
This is Chance’s latest effort since igniting the rollout to his forthcoming comeback album. Always one to push some much-needed positivity, Chance utilizes another paint-style cover — mimicking prior singles in “Child Of God,” “A Bar About A Bar” and “The Highs & The Lows” — as he leads in the bouncy cut chanting “you’ll know when we get there.”
As Chance tears off a string of lyrical acrobatics over the progressive, soulful instrumental, King Promise pops up periodically throughout the track to add beautiful vocals that waft throughout the six-minute track. This isn’t Chance and King Promise’s first collaboration either, appearing together earlier this year on the Ghanaian artist’s album, 5 Star, on the finale track “Run to You.”
“YAH KNOW” also follows the announcement of Chance’s free concert in Ghana, featuring appearances from T-Pain, Jeremih, Vic Mensa and more. Additionally, in the two years since his last project, Chance has been ramping up his new movement, dropping four tracks with features from Joey Bada$$, Vic Mensa and Smoko Ono.
Chance’s new direction looks promising as he continues to outdo himself. His last album, The Big Day, garnered verses from everyone from Shawn Mendes to Gucci Mane, showcasing the Chicago artist’s influence in the game despite its problematically poor reviews.
However, “YAH KNOW” is the latest chapter of Chance the Rapper’s new era — giving fans greater hope and higher expectations for his eventual full-length return.
