Lancey Foux’s ‘BACK2DATRAP’ sees UK star ascend to new heights

Although Lancey Foux has been on the cusp of the mainstream for years, he hasn’t forgotten his roots.

In the time since sharing his debut album PINK in 2015, the East London rapper has amassed a massive cult following and brought the same genre of underground, electronic, hyper-trap music that Ken Carson and Destroy Lonely have helped propagate to the U.K. His latest project, BACK2DATRAP, sees Foux dive back into his early SoundCloud roots to deliver a dozen hard-hitting tracks.

Stemming from his hit single “Mmm Hmm” with Sexyy Red earlier this year, BACK2DATRAP‘s sonic direction seemingly takes place in 2021. Early fans of Foux are sure to appreciate the electric direction he takes here. Unlike his 2022 LP, Life in Hell — which featured deeper, more melodic cuts like ‘Now > Then’ (feat. 070Shake) and a duo of dance tracks with Kaytranada — this new Lancey feels and sounds like his old self, but with more polished and hunger. Spanning 12 tracks, BACK2DATRAP is an album made for the mosh-pit.

Setting the tone with heavy-hitting cuts like “YESYOUARE” and “ADHD,” the album’s hyper, over-the-top production style ties everything together seamlessly, thanks to longtime Lancey Foux collaborator Bally (who is credited as the LP’s executive producer). Foux finishes off BACK2DATRAP with a brooding, slow jam entitled “Last Breath,” which acts as an immersive callback to his younger self before the music took off.

“Yeah, first things first, you’ll keep your soul (Keep your soul)

Huh, these ni**as gon’ try, you never fold (You never fold, ha)

Thеse women gon’ try, you nevеr fold (Yeah, come on), uh

Kill if your ego catch a bird (Know bro)”

Foux’s new record comes off the heels of a prolific festival season. Having performed at Rolling Loud Miami, Summer Smash, Wireless Festival and Reading & Leeds, “Final Breath” seemingly acts as a victory lap for Foux; reminiscing on the more introspective and deliberate songwriting style many of his newer fans know him for. Nonetheless, it’s refreshing to hear Foux take on this new persona head-on.
