Nettspend’s ‘THAT ONE SONG’ removed from DSPs, Deftones does not clear sample

A landmark drop for the underground turned into a massive occasion Sunday night (July 7), as Nettspend finally released his long-awaited track “THAT ONE SONG.”

Teased throughout various snippets, videos and performances over the past few months, the DMV rapper samples “Entombed” by legendary rock group Deftones on the abrasive yet energetic cut. “THAT ONE SONG,” also known as “DEFTONES SONG,” “BANDO!” and “she just wan get high,” follows the footsteps of his breakout hit “Nothing Like Uuu,” which reportedly samples another classic cut: Ella Mai’s “Boo’d Up.”

Between raunchy bars, crinkled 808s and a could-care-less aura, the visual for “THAT ONE SONG” (directed by Grade A’s Nolan Riddle) co-stars Nett’s close collaborators OsamaSon and Xaviersobased, who both have grown alongside the budding 17-year-old icon since breaking out last year. Levitating as soon as the beat drops in the video, “THAT ONE SONG” proves to be a raging yet ethereal experience—coded with Nett’s unmistakeable rebel aesthetic as he soars amongst a cloudless sky.

However, the video has since been removed from YouTube due to a copyright claim from Warner Music Group (indicating that the sample was not cleared by Deftones). The song was later removed from Spotify on July 10, but remains on Apple Music.

Since turning up Lenny’s Tent at Summer Smash last month, Nettspend has seemingly achieved a level-up only few can contest with. Cameos in fellow Virginia native Tommy Richman’s “DEVIL IS A LIE” and “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” coincidentally raised eyebrows as to how often he’s popped up in high traffic places with high profile people.

Meeting Anna Wintour at Paris Fashion Week, linking with Pi’erre Bourne, dropping “WITHDRAWALS” with OsamaSon and garnering immense hype for his forthcoming mixtape, reportedly titled BADASSF*CKINGKID, have all been the icing on the cake of his rapid come-up. The debut tape, which is rumored to feature production credits from Bourne, F1LTHY, TRGC, OK, CARDO, Evilgiane and more, is poised to propel Nettspend to the forefront of the industry with mainstream eyes taking second glances.

It’s impressive that Nettspend has achieved everything he has with such little music out. However, his succees seems to be both calculated and conducive to the viral moments he’s garnered. Just like “Nothing Like Uuu” and the oft-released “MUMMY / CHACHING,” “THAT ONE SONG” is a badass anthem—proving to be another glaring example of Nett’s superstar potential.
